The Leftovers Season 2 Episode 5...Ima Need A Hug After This One...

This was probably the most bonafide Leftovers episode of the season so far. It was packed with all the awesomely depressing and mysterious stuff we've come to expect from this series. Here's my thoughts on episode 5...

This Show Is Now Focusing On 3 Plot Lines And Is Totally Pulling It Off:

To be honest when I saw the preview for this one, I wasn't jumping up for joy (in fact I thought we might get a dreaded filler episode)... and as expected, we didn't see anything related to those missing girls or the Guilty Remnant's craziness. Instead, episode 5 expanded Matt's subplot... which turned out to be pretty damn entertaining. Why?

1. It explored the mystery of Mary's awakening...
2) It revealed Mary's pregnancy...
3) It focused on Matt's struggle to get them back to Miracle...
4) It delivered a full circle ending with that guy who stole their wristbands...
5) It included a bunch of biblical parallels (Job/ Joseph and Mary)...(and I'll be the first to admit I didn't pick up on that second one right away, though u'd think it would have been super obvious)

This episode simply got it done...and wasn't like the character building episode Matt got in the first season. This one actually made Mary's awakening (and possible reawakening) a central component to the events in Miracle... because like Matt said, if Mary wakes up, John Murphy's gonna get a talking to. I'm excited to see how well all these stories will tie together... and I'll never stop appreciating how this show manages to drop more and more mystery/ questions/ symbolism/ deep ass themes on us while never really becoming too confusing to watch.

Did Mary Really Wake Up?:

Matt claims that on their first night in Miracle, Mary woke up. Yet in typical Leftovers fashion, we never actually saw this happen. While I'm inclined to believe Matt (in fact I believe Matt more than I believe Kevin that Patty is real), there's always the chance that it never happened. That moment when a disoriented Matt saw Mary talking to him from the car sure seemed like his own mental projection. If he imagined that, could he have imagined her first awakening? Then again there's that random guy who told Matt that Mary said to get her back to Miracle...

What Did That Brian Scene Mean?:

While trying to find some fast cash, Matt finds a woman who's willing to shell out the green if... Matt smacks some dude with an oar while screaming "Brian!" I need your help people, what did this really mean? I literally watched that scene twice and came up with nothing...damn it.

What did you think of episode 5? Did it depress you enough? Would you have given Murphy back the wristband? Do you think Mary will wake up again?
